This volume contains selected papers that were presented during the "First Humboldt Workshop on Surgical Research" held in Bucharest, Romania on May 5-7, 2005. The workshop, with the major theme "Intra-abdominal sepsis unresolved issues", organized under the auspices of the prestigious "Alexander von Humboldt Foundation", provided a good opportunity to learn about the promise of basic sepsis research, the limitations of rapidly evolving technology and the application of complex system strategies to evaluate basic disciplines, clinical and surgical data sets.
